Our Story: Fun And Function Magical Cushion

Victorio has been diagnosed with Asperger’s since the tender age of four years old. I have shared many times that I am the one who realized something just wasn’t right as he grew older. He had a ton of sensory deficiencies and it has been very hard for him to sit still for long periods of time due to his ADHD as well. I have tried several ways to have him seated for longer periods of time now that he’s in middle school. I am not in the classroom to see how this may all play out in school, but I am very well aware of what it looks like in our home.

When he arrives home from school after settling in, I notice how uneasy he is when it’s time to do homework. There are many times when he asks to get up and take a walk because he’s aware of just how fidgety he is. He isn’t doing this on purpose or as a delay tactic as it may seem, it’s just the way the chair may feel at the moment or even how he feels in the environment. I accommodate him as best as I can to make sure that he’s comfy and he’s in the best learning environment possible.

Thanks to Fun and Function we were able to get our hands on the Magical Cushion and it is working out very well for us during homework time. He loved the feeling of it on the kitchen chair at the table and I noticed a difference immediately. It wasn’t because it was NEW but because it helped him relax and to stay put and focused. In case you didn’t know, Fun and Function is the leading resource of kid-friendly sensory tools. I love the goal of Fun and Function’s which is empowering different. They believe that differences make the world a better, more fun, and more interesting place to be. I couldn’t agree more! How’s that for a brand that knows the uniqueness of every child? Exactly what we strive for over here at MommyTeaches.

My son is different but in a wonderful way. Not everyone can sit for long periods of time and that’s okay. That’s what I love about this brand and what they have in mind when developing their products. They thought about the comfort of children – all kinds of children. I love that this seat cushion stimulates sensory awareness, contains the wiggles and jiggles, and provides a soothing place to sit. It allows kids to move as needed, which in the end, improves their concentration and attention skills while allowing them to remain in that one place. This is exactly what our children struggle to master; concentration and attention skills. It also increases sensory awareness and postural stability, while challenging balance and providing postural training. Another plus!

My son interacts with therapists every single day so to know that this was created by a therapist makes it even more phenomenal for me. Aviva Weiss knew exactly what we parents were going through and she didn’t want us to face frustrations any longer. This is why she created the best sensory toys with children and parents in mind. She knows how hard it is to watch our children feel different or go through these sensory issues. Weiss shares that, improving the lives of kids with special needs is Fun and Function’s driving mission. Everything they make is kid-friendly, affordable, and most importantly, makes a real developmental and therapeutic difference in the lives of children. How’s that for taking the whole child into consideration?

After about a week of using the cushion, I can see my son is sitting for longer periods of time. He’s no longer requesting short walks around the house and his homework is being completed quicker because he’s remaining focused and on task. He’s not taking the device into the classroom yet, but he’s using it more at home when he wants to watch a movie or play with his toys. He looks for his magical cushion and sits right on it. He relies on it because he knows that it brings him comfort and is soothing. It makes me feel good to know that he is aware that he can count on something to help him remain focused. Ultimately, this is what I want for him. I want him to know that he has tools to help him and a mother who advocates for him to get him what he needs to be successful. You can do the same by heading on over to FunandFunction.com and purchasing the necessities for your child and his/her diagnosis.

Care to share: Which tools do you use to help your child with the challenges associated with his or her diagnosis?
