#FoodPower14 Recap With MomsRising

August 4, 2014 By Eileen Carter-Campos

This is the second year that I have attended #FoodPower and it was, once again, a union of strong women with a common cause. This year, it was combined with #NotJustTalk14 with the fierce Tanya Fields. We were able to socialize and share our thoughts on a topic that is definitely no surprise to many of us, the unethical marketing of unhealthy food. We were also able to recognize those who have left their mark on their communities and within Social Media on important topics that arise in Momsrising discussions.

The discussion focused on ways in which the community can become more involved and stop contaminating our children with “JUNK” food encouraging education about healthy food. Migdalia Rivera from Stiletto Media held a panel with The Fit Latina as well as Irina Gonzalez from HealthyLatinFood.com and we really got a sense of how Social Media can play an integral part in making people aware of issues in which we can all have a voice. We recognized that Social Media and our presence online can have a HUGE impact on decisions that people make when it comes to food and other products.

During the panel, we did a round robin and were asked what we were passionate about. It really gave the panel a warm feel to it. We also discussed how we incorporate Social Media to make our voices heard, especially about topics such as healthy living & healthy foods. Irina Gonzalez shared her story and ways that she introduced healthy foods to her family that had no idea what some of the veggies, like Kale, were. She also discussed making her “latino meals” healthier by including healthier ingredients. Alexandra Morbitzer from FitLatina.com discussed the way she created her empire right from Twitter. She engaged with many people online that led her to create her website and move onto other platforms. It was in this moment that we recognized that we are a part of a movement… We are the movement toward a better future for our children.

For myself, Social Media has allowed me to become a part of Momsrising by attending their #FoodFri chats as well as become educated on topics that I would otherwise brush under the rug. They bring me the awareness I need while guiding me towards becoming a more active voice on the matter simply because I can! As a writer and Blogger, I have a voice and a platform through which I can share my feelings on the topics that are haunting our youth. With my online voice, I have the power to make healthy or unhealthy choices, seen by readers, and have likeminded discussions with others. I can use my platform to bring awareness to readers and attend events like those that Momsrising creates to bring awareness to our communities. I have also changed my mindset about lunches created at home as well as school lunches based on the Lunch Revolution that Laura Fuentes has created with MOMables. All of these factors come into play when we recognize that Social Media plays an integral part on topics as important as those discussed with Momsrising. If you haven’t joined Momsrising do so. It will definitely be a life changing experience.
